The Process
The concept piece began with a photograph of an empty ice cream cone. Using Adobe Firefly, I began developing the core concept. Once I was happy with the AI-generated image, I enhanced the composition using a mix of Photoshop and Firefly on the platform. Finally, I developed the typography in Adobe Illustrator before bringing it into Photoshop for the finishing touches.
The untrained often view generative AI as a magical black box: you type a sentence, and a flawless final asset appears. In reality, it is far from that simple. True collaboration with AI requires a deep understanding of its logic, a massive amount of experimentation, and the ability to adapt your direction just as much as the tool learns from you.
Below, you can see the final concept piece alongside the experimental iterations it took to get there. This project showcases a deliberate, multi-layered pipeline: generating vector character assets in Illustrator, building the environmental scale in Photoshop, and ultimately using traditional, non-generative digital techniques to inject the drama, realism, and human art direction needed to bring the scene to life.

I wanted to explore the boundaries of modern digital illustration by merging generative AI efficiency with traditional digital precision, creating a dramatic, narrative-driven scene. The workflow utilised a multi-stage pipeline, beginning with Adobe Firefly in Illustrator to establish the vector character concepts. These assets were integrated into Adobe Photoshop, where generative tools built the environmental scale. The final, crucial stage relied entirely on non-generative techniques, manually manipulating light passes, atmospheric textures, and colour grading to add depth, realism, and a distinct sense of drama. A striking concept piece that demonstrates how cutting-edge AI tools can be elevated by expert art direction, ensuring the final output feels human, intentional, and polished.

An exploration into generative AI text. I created the sample text within Adobe Illustrator, using a handwritten typeface, perfecting the composition. I then used this as a composition reference in Adobe Firefly, altering the prompts to explore desired effects.
