Heat Map Testing

Every piece of creative makes assumptions about where the eye will go. I test mine. Using attention heat maps, I validate the visual hierarchy of my work — checking that the right element lands first, and nothing important gets skimmed past. It's one part of a wider process that treats design as something to be measured, not just made.

Serving Up Nostalgia: Retro Mascot Character Illustrations

Welcome to a project that brings a massive helping of vintage charm straight to the digital canvas. This collection blends classic aesthetic principles with the high-energy demands of modern branding, resulting in a series that is all about bold visual impact and cheeky personality.

The Process: From Rough Sketch to Crisp Vector

Every great piece of design starts with a simple idea. This character collection began its life as a series of rough, energetic sketches on paper. To bring these mascots into the modern era while retaining their authentic grit, the artwork was carefully digitised.

By leveraging Adobe Illustrator, specifically the sketch-to-vector tool combined with AI generation, the raw energy of the initial drawings was transformed into crisp, scalable vector graphics. This data-driven approach to design ensures the artwork remains perfectly optimised for any medium, from punchy social media campaigns to large-format digital displays.

The Collection

The series features five distinct designs, each bursting with nostalgic flavour and playful typography

  • Hot Hot Hot: A sweating, shouting frappe cup feeling the intense heat under the bold

"Hot Hot Hot" typography.

  • Keep Cool In The Gang: A pair of oversized, suspicious eyes peering

out from the vintage-inspired slogan "Keep Cool In The Gang".

  • No Bun: A deliciously devious, winking burger character paired

with the clever tagline "No Bun Intended".

  • Wanna Piece: A glamorous, lip-pouting slice of cherry pie proudly declaring

"Gonna Have Me A Piece And Eat It".

  • Drawgasm, ink-splattered pencil mascot starring in "HB Presents: Draw-Gasm",

proving the creative grind never truly stops.

The Aesthetic and Application

The highly focused colour palette of burnt orange and textured cream immediately evokes the golden age of diners and hospitality branding. Distressed halftone patterns and classic checkerboard borders tie the series together, providing perfect brand consistency across the entire collection. It is a playful nod to retro diner design, built with a modern marketing strategy firmly in mind.
